At least 50 people including 20 law enforcers were injured in a clash between police and textile mill workers demanding nine-hour shift at Rupganj in Narayanganj yesterday.
The workers of ACS Textile at Barpa first staged a demonstration at the factory around 8:00am and vandalised five vehicles, some machines and three office rooms to press their demand of nine-hour shift instead of the existing 12-hour one.
Later, over 4,000 workers of the factory took to the street and blockaded Dhaka-Sylhet highway for around two hours since 9:00am. They vandalised at least 20 vehicles on the highway.
Officer-in-Charge Forkan Sikder of Rupganj Police Station told The Daily Star that the clash erupted around 10:00am when the workers continued the blockade defying police request to call off their programme.
Narayanganj Police Super Biswas Afzal Hossain said police charged truncheon and lobbed 15 teargas canisters to disperse the demonstrators. The law enforcers also had to fire 60 rubber bullets in the face of the workers attacking with sticks and brickbats.
Witnesses said police also fired shotguns at the workers. The law enforcers continued charging batons on the workers even when the demonstrators left the spot and took shelter in nearby shops and lanes.
Police picked up five workers from the spot.
Meanwhile, the textile mill remained closed yesterday. Daud Masud Akbani, managing director of ACS Textile, said the factory had never saw labour unrest over wage or allowance. He claimed that the attack by the workers had caused the mill a loss of Tk 20 crore.
He also claimed that a certain worker leader had incited the demonstration.
Ziaul Ahsan Talukder, assistant police super (Kha Circle) of Narayanganj police, said 20 police members including sub-inspectors Awlad, Mamnun and Shafiq were injured while driving off the demonstrators from the highway.
The situation in the area is now under control.

Some historic developments in the judiciary in the past eight months gave this new dimension to observance of the National Mourning Day on the 35th death anniversary of Bangabandhu, today.
"It is impossible to forget the grief of the gruesome killings of August 15, but this time we at least have the consolation that we could ensure justice," Bangabandhu's grandson Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, who lost his parents in the August 1975 mayhem, told The Daily Star yesterday.
"We must mourn tomorrow [today], but this time we have an achievement, as the nation has been freed from its stigma. We hope that six other condemned killers absconding abroad will also be brought back to complete implementation of the court verdict," continued Taposh, who was around four years at that time and survived the mayhem.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, in a message on the occasion said, "We have freed the nation from the stigma to some extent through executing the verdict of Bangabandhu killing case."
The attack at Bangabandhu's residence on Road-32 in Dhanmondi on this day 35 years ago left 11 people -- Bangabandhu, his wife, two daughters-in-law, three sons including 10-year-old Sheikh Russell, a brother and three others -- dead.
Bangabandhu's two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana survived the carnage as they were abroad at that time.
"They committed a crime against humanity by killing a child and three innocent women who were unarmed. They eliminated almost the entire family who were found in the house. There is no explanation on the side of the accused as to why they killed these innocent people. The acts of the accused were so barbarous which could only be compared with orgies," observed the Supreme Court in the historic judgment over the Bangabandhu killing case.
Since the assassination, no government took initiative to bring the killers to justice until Sheikh Mujib's own party Awami League came to power in 1996 under the leadership of his daughter Sheikh Hasina.
In November 1996, Hasina's first government repealed the black indemnity ordinance of 1975 that barred the trial of the killers. Her second government completed the trial and executed the verdict January this year.
The court gave capital punishment to 12 killers. Of them, five have been hanged, one died abroad earlier while six are still hiding in different countries.
In another brutal case of assassination, four national leaders -- Syed Nazrul Islam, acting president of Bangladesh government in exile in 1971, Tajuddin Ahmed, prime minister, M Mansur Ali, finance minister, and AHM Qamaruzzaman, minister for home affairs, relief and rehabilitation, of the same government -- were murdered at Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975.
The four were killed only 79 days after the assassination of Bangabandhu, but justice of this brutality is still due.
"Steps have been taken to bring back the remaining convicts of Bangabandhu killing. Measures have also been taken to expedite the trial of the killers of four national leaders," Hasina said in her message.
On the dark night of August 15, 1975, AFM Mohitul Islam, 22-year-old receptionist at Bangabandhu's residence, fortunately survived the heinous attack.
Mohitul, plaintiff of the Bangabandhu murder case, is still haunted by the trauma of that fateful night. He told The Daily Star yesterday, "I am happy as the verdict of the case has been executed, though partially. I will be happier when the verdict would be fully executed."
Mohitul believes that some people other than the condemned killers were also involved in the conspiracy, and they patronised the brutal killings of Bangabandhu.
"The patrons and conspirators of the killings should also be brought to justice. If it is not possible now, the government should expose them in some way," Mohitul demanded.
Taposh however claims that the nation knows about these patrons and conspirators who tried to hinder the trial of Bangabandhu killing case.
"It is a pity that the surviving family members of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the nation, as a whole, had to wait for about long 34 years to get justice by disposing of the criminal case of the gruesome murder," the apex court said in the full text of the judgment released in December 2009, a month after it delivered the verdict in the open court.
The judgment said, "To protect and shelter such killers is a great crime, a great sin and sin spares none."
The motive of the killings was to divert the country from the track of secular spirit, which is evident in the actions of the rulers after the assassination of Bangabandhu.
After the August 15 carnage, illegal military rule was introduced in the country for the first time and Khandker Mushtaque Ahmed, Abu Sadaat Mohammad Sayem and Maj Gen Ziaur Rahman unconstitutionally took over the state power.
They distorted constitution, protected the killers of Bangabandhu and rewarded them.
The Fifth Amendment to the Constitution had legitimised the governments and military rule since the assassination of Bangabandhu on August 15, 1975, to April 9, 1979, which was declared illegal by the apex court in February.
The declaration will remain an example in the history of the judiciary as so many hurdles had to be cleared before justice was done. Among those was the Indemnity Ordinance introduced by Khandker Mushtaque Ahmed and constitutionally legitimised by Ziaur Rahman through the Fifth Amendment.
"We are putting on record our total disapproval of martial law and suspension of the constitution or any part thereof in any form," said the Supreme Court and continued, "The perpetrators of such illegalities should also be suitably punished and condemned so that in future no adventurist, no usurper, would dare to defy the people, their constitution, their government, established by them with their consent."
These significant verdicts of the apex court in the last eight months not only paved the way for bringing the country back on track, but also gave a significant dimension to observance of the National Mourning Day, a national holiday restored by the High Court in a verdict in 2008.
Taposh, a ruling party lawmaker, said, "Two decisions of the Supreme Court [one on Bangabandhu murder and the other on the Fifth Amendment] supplement each other and these will help build the country as martyrs and freedom fighters dreamt of.

Mehazabien ready for films

She is taking notes on how they speak, ask questions to news sources and present their reports on television channels.
‘Not that I am concentrating only on Bangladeshi television channel’s reporters, I am following foreign news channels as well,’ Mehazabien says.
This is how Mehazabien is preparing herself to cope with the character she will play for her debut film ‘Warish’.
The film is a venture by popular TV play director Salahuddin Lavlu, and the shooting for the film is expected to take place soon after the Eid-ul-fitr, said Mehazabien.
Mehazabien’s character in the play is of a courageous TV reporter named Sukh, who enjoys taking up challenges. Promising model-actor Arefin Shuvo will play against her in the film to be produced by Impress Telefilm Limited.
Customarily, a Warish or Inheritor means a person who legally gets the assets and properties from his or her parents.
But the film ‘Warish’ deals with the inheritance of honesty instead, that the parents pass on to their children, informed Mehazabien.
After winning the Lux-Channel i Superstar title in 2009, Mehazabien has acted in the TV play ‘Tumi Thako Sindhu Pare’. Luckily enough, she was paired with popular actor Mahfuz Ahmed in her very first TV play. Later, she also appeared in the play ‘Bhalobasake Bhalobaste Jante Hoy’ against Nirob and in ‘Call Centre’ with Hillol.
The audience quite appreciated the newcomer in all the three plays, but Mehazabien seems not much interested in the small screen. ‘I cannot give much time for acting as I am still student’ she explains. ‘Besides, I have decided to fully concentrate on my first feature film after Eid,’ she added.
However, she has already finished shooting for another TV play which will go air on Eid. She is expected to act in one or two more dramas for Eid. She is also appeared as model for several fashion houses this Eid and worked in a TV commercial for Amin Jewellers.

“The story is quite remarkable. I hope the audience will head towards movie theatres to watch the film,” said Ferdous.
Ferdous has recently acted in the film “Guerrilla”, directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff. “It's been a great opportunity for me to act in this film. The film is based on the Liberation War and has received financial assistance from the Government of Bangladesh. The film is an adaptation of a Syed Shamsul Haq story,” he said.
Asked about his experiences of acting in the film, the actor said, “It was truly an interesting experience. I've done more of a cameo in the film. I play a university teacher. Shooting was held in the northern parts of the country.”
About acting in Tollywood (Kolkata-based movie industry), Ferdous said, “So far I have acted in around 15 Tollywood films in the last two years.”
About Bangladeshi films, Ferdous pointed out that prior to working in “Guerrilla”, he acted in the film “Jolrong” directed by Shahnewaz Kakoli.
What are the noticeable differences between Dhaliwood and Tollywood films? “Distinctions are conspicuous. Commitment to work gives a boost to Tollywood films. A debate is on in our country right now, regarding whether Hindi films are to be screened or not. My view is that if we screen 10 Hindi films in Bangladesh, they have to screen 10 Bangladeshi films in India,” he responded.
About his upcoming film “Ek Cup Cha” that he is producing, Ferdous said, “I have been thinking of producing films. Noted director Basu Chatterjee has started writing the script. Internationally famed singers Runa Laila and Hari Haran (India) will do playback for a song. Moushumi is my co-artiste in the film. Renowned Tollywood director Rituparno Ghosh will also act in the film.”
Shooting for the film will kick off next month. Dhaka, Sylhet and Cox's Bazar have been selected as shooting locations. Emon Saha, Habib, Nochiketa and Bappi Lahiri will direct music for the film. Humayun Ahmed, Kabir Bakul and Zahid Akbar will write lyrics for the songs.

After Salman Shah's death in 1997, I acted in one of his unfinished films, 'Buker Bhetor Agun'. Right at that time eminent Indian director Basu Chatterjee came to Bangladesh in search of a fresh face for his film. After watching the print of 'Buker Bhetor Agun', Chatterjee selected me for his film 'Hothat Brishti' which was a major hit. 'Hothat Brishti' was the turning point of my career.”
“I would like to continue acting till the end of my days. When the audience no longer wants me on the screen, I will pull the curtain on my career,” he said.

Homayra Himu’s new TVC after 2 yrs
"I like to perform as model in TVC. Because within very short time result of the TVC can reach into the mass people and it is also being aired very quickly," said Homayra Himu about performing in a new TVC after two years break.
Himu worked on August 5 for a new TVC of a product of 'Lizan Mehedi Chand Raat.' It was made by Rumel Rohan. It will be aired from tomorrow in different satellite channels.
"Two years ago, I worked in a TVC of 'Banaphul Lachcha Semai.' Then I couldn't get opportunity to perform in any TVC," said Himu.
Himu's first TVC was made in 2005. She became a model in a promotional TVC on creating awareness about HIV/AIDS that was made by popular actor Afzal Hossain.
On the occasion of coming Eid festival, Himu has performed in six plays till now. Now she is working for a play titled "Himur Click Click.' Safayet Mansur is giving direction of the play. Hasan Masud, Sumaiya Shimu, Swadhin Khasru are co-artistes of Himu in this play.
Popular musical award, Citycell Channel i Music Awards will be held for the sixth time soon, announced the organisers at a press conference in the city on August 11.

Eminent artistes including Sudhin das, Sohrab Hossain, Sheikh Sadi Khan, Rafiqul Alam, Abida Sultana, Shakila Zafar, Bappa Mazumder among others were also present at the event.
This year the awards will be given into 16 categories including Tagore song, Nazrul Song, folk song, modern song, classical music, film song, band music, underground band music, best lyricist, debut singer (male and female), sound engineering, cover design, music director and music video. A lifetime achievement award will be also there.
Besides, ‘Popular Awards’ will be given for adhunik song, film song, band music and debut male and female singers like the previous years.
The awards will be given following three steps— preliminary selections, secondary selections and final selections. Artistes can submit their albums (both audio and video) released in the year 2009 to the organizers from August 12 to September 20.

Impress Telefim holds copyright of 4 popular films
Impress Telefilm Limited has received copyright of four famous films from the production house Ashirbad Chalachitra. The films are Ritwik Ghatak’s ‘Titas Ekti Nadir Naam’, Gautom Ghosh’s ‘Padma Nadir Majhi’ Anup Singh’s ‘The Name of a River’ and Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Hothat Bristi’.
The films were handed over at a programme at the Impress’s Tejgaon office on Thursday. Impress Telefilm Limited managing director Faridur Reza Sagor and Ashirbad Chalachitra’s producer Habibur Rahman and eminent Indian filmmaker Goutom Ghosh were, among others, present at a programme. Habibur Rahman and Goutom Ghosh formally handed over the original prints of the films to Faridur Reza Sagor.
Faridur Reza Sagor said, ‘This is not about money; this is about our commitment to the audience. We are happy that we will be able to telecast these classic films for our audience. This is just the beginning of our film preserving programme.’ He also mentioned that Impress Telefilm Limited produced a total of 56 films in the past 10 years, many of which gained both popularity and critical acclaims.
Praising the initiative, Gautam Ghosh said, ‘I am feeling very happy to attend this event; it has taken me back to those days when I was shooting for the film ‘Padma Nadir Majhi.’
Habibur Rahman expressed his content saying, ‘I believe these films will help Impress Telefilm Limited to prosper further, which will also be an achievement for Ashirbad Chalachchitra itself.’

Popular actor Sajal and sexy actress Bindu have performed in an eid-special drama titled ‘Bibahottor Shangbardhana’. Famed actor-director of the small screen Gazi Rakayet has been in the making of this single episode comedy.
The director says, ‘This is my new directional venture after a long gap. This is an eid-special drama, so I have tried to turn a funny story into an entertaining dramatic piece. Hope the viewer would enjoy the comedy.’

Badhon only acts when that interests her
Lux superstar Badhon has already acted in eight special TV plays for approaching Eid which are expected to be telecast on different channels. Still, she has some more plays at his hands and keeps on working on them currently.
Besides, the number of offers of acting for new TV plays is swelling day by day. However, she thinks of turning down new offers.
The audience are going to miss the regular presence of popular actor Badhon after the Eid. The Lux superstar is preparing to enter in her career as a dentist to fulfil her lifelong desire to become a successful dental surgeon.
‘I am starting my new career shortly after Eid, and I want to concentrate only on this job now,’ said the glamour girl.
She says she has already lost interest in working in the media after working in so many plays. ‘It would be meaningless if I continue acting only for money,’ said the would-be dental surgeon.
‘I have already given up acting in several drama serials. You see, I started acting in television as a hobby, I never thought to take it as a profession. Not that I am bidding acting good buy, if I find any character interesting, I will definitely will. I just don’t want to act randomly only for money,’ Badhon added.
Though Badhon has also debuted in silver-screen this year with the film ‘Nijhjum Aranya’ directed by Mushfiqur Rahman Gulzar, she said the film was also her last. ‘In fact, I cannot adjust myself to films; that is why I decided not to go for films anymore.’
However, Badhon seems enthusiast about her roles in the plays she acted in for Eid. One of the plays, Anjan Aich’s ‘Subarno Ebong O Loukik Min Santan, is expected to go on air on Desh TV. The play revolves around a girl who has nightmares about a group of fish vendor who force her to buy cat fish, a species she is afraid of.
‘I like the character very much and I tried my level best to portray the character life-like’, said Badhon.
Currently, Badhon can be seen in the popular drama serial ‘Chaitapagal’. Directed by actor Mahfuz Ahmed, the serial is being telecast on Channel i. She has also finished working for another drama serial, Arif Khan’s ‘Phul Chand Amabashya’ which will go on air on ATN Bangla soon.

Television channels of the country will telecast special programmes to mark the 69th death anniversary of poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore today. A selection of the programmes is listed below.
ATN Bangla will telecast a musical –talkshow ‘Gitanjali Bismoy’ at 10:30am. Produced by Selim Dawla Khan and anchored by Dr Afsar Ahmed, the programme will feature a discussion on different aspects the poet’s most celebrated book, Gitanjali. Singers Lily Islam, Mahadev Gosh, Sagarika Zamali, Dr Chanchal Khan and Andrew Jones will perform at the programme.
Eminent Tagore artiste Rezwana Chowdhury Banya’s solo musical programme ‘Mukto Ami Ruddha Dware’ will be telecast on Channel i at 9:35pm. The singer will render some popular Tagore songs including ‘Din abasan holo’, ‘Ma hariye jai ta’, ‘Pran chai chokkhu na chai’, and ‘Dariye achho tumi’ in the programme produced by Shahidul Alam Sachhu and Rehana Samdany.
NTV will air telefilm ‘Shuvodristi’ at 2:30pm. The telefilm is written and directed by Ferdous Hasan and the cast includes Shaheed Sharif Khan and Farha Ruma.
